Properties:
Sedative supplements are known to enhance the body’s ability to relax and fall asleep by releasing constriction in the smooth muscle and enabling anti-spasmodic activity. These herbs are traditionally used to reduce pain and nervous tension associated with anxious dispositions and over-excitement/stimulation.
Traditional Uses:
Valerian was traditionally used in Europe as an ancient remedy for over-excitement and sleeplessness. It contains a group of compounds called valepotriates that have an anti-spasmodic action, together with some of their co-constituents and volatile oils, have a depressive effect on the nervous system and relax constricted muscles. Valerian is warming and suits those with a cold, depressed state.
Hops is a vine native to Europe but now grows profusely in North America. Traditionally used to flavour beer since the Protestant Reformation. Hops is also relaxing and anti-spasmodic like Valerian, and is used on tense, nervous states to relax and calm the mental, emotional and physical body.
Passionflower, native to Peru, was utilised by the French soldiers during the First World War in the trenches to soothe the anguish of war. It activates the supra-sensorial by soothing down the sensitive and exciting stressors that are related to it. Passionflower works on the central nervous system to soothe tension and frazzled nerves, acting as a sedative, anti-depressant, anti-spasmodic, and anxiolytic, helping one to sleep well without side effects. Passionflower is for those that have a predisposition to overthink, which often gets us into trouble around sleeping time.
